“Research has shown over and over again that teenagers do better and feel better in schools that start later,” said Ingvi Hrannar Omarsson. This shows that starting school later would improve students learning. Students would thrive in the academic environment if schools started later in the morning. Others would prefer to keep school start times early for various reasons. There are many benefits to starting school later, such as improved academic performance, brain function and safety.

Teenage brain clocks are about two hours behind those of full-grown adults (Wahlstrom). Teens brains don’t naturally wake up until after eight am. (Wahlstrom). Melatonin is a sleep hormone. Brains release melatonin as a signal that allows us to fall and stay asleep. According to Kyla Wahlstrom, “Your brain does not naturally wake up until eight am.” People say that teens could just go to sleep earlier, however research has proven that the human body doesn’t release melatonin until about eleven pm (Wahlstrom). If school started later there would be more morning time at home. Teens would be able to eat breakfast in the morning. Breakfast acts as brain fuel, which improves students academic performance and alertness (Ross). Despite the fact that some people may argue that in the morning most core classes aren’t taught, but in reality most students have schedules that begin with core classes, which is when the brain is not at its peak performance.
