Personal Narrative: My Life Changing Career

Everyone has a reason why they chose the career they did. I like to think my reasoning is special, sad but special. Some people decided it because they just like the job, but I had a life changing experience that decided it for me. I decided in fifth grade that I wanted to help people when I grow up and that has been my plan ever since. The exact careers I have picked has changed, but they all had to do with helping people. There are always things that happen in our lives that impact us greatly and change who we are or make decisions for us. I always hated being asked what I wanted to be when I grew up when I was in elementary school. Back then, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, but that always seemed to be a popular question. Why would people think we knew what we wanted to be years later? It just never made sense to me, but here is my life changing situation that decided my career options. …show more content…
Kelly had a huge family, but there was one person I got along with very well and I looked up to him. He was her father, John. Everyone called him Jack because his wife’s name was Jill, so as a pair they were Jack and Jill. He was an outstanding man who was very involved in his community. He was a volunteer at his church in Cranberry and he even coached their men’s softball team. My dad was a part of that team because of Jack. He took me to every softball game and let me keep score, and as a little girl, that was very exciting to me. He has taken me to get ice cream, helped me go bowling, and he has done other things that made me very happy at the time. Everyone he came into contact with, liked him and he did not have any enemies. He was too kind of a person to everyone he met. Those are the type of people you think nothing bad will ever happen to

When considering what career I wanted to achieve I was given a substantial amount of advice; starting with choosing something that you are passionate about and ending with researching everything you can about what you want to do. Having been given advice, and learned from past experiences that I needed to listen to all the advice. So I thought long and hard about what my dream job would be. I knew it had to be something where I was helping people. After my freshman year in college, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to do something with psychology, hopefully using animal assisted therapy.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

Growing up I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a profession. No inclination of something that amazed me or pushed me toward it. I eventually chose what I thought would be a good stable career simply because it would be a financially good choice but it never seemed like something I could stick with or love. I discounted anything from the medical field because everyone was going there and I didn't want to be a lost number of people rushing to the same career, I wanted to be a little different.…
