Why are books banned? There are many banned and challenged books out there but why are they banned and is it for the right reasons? One banned book is the book Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark: More Tales to Chill Your Bones. There are a many reasons why this book is banned but I will tell you three. Banning books because of what? “Never take a learning opportunity away from a student”, this was said by a character on the hit show, How To Get Away With Murder. Should we, as students, have the right to learn what what information books provide us, or should all questionable books be locked away from the world where no student can ever learn from them. Books are wonderful sources of information, but everyday, books get banned from schools for strange, and sometimes ridiculous reasons. Although In Cold Blood contains scenes of descriptive, graphic violence, it should not be banned because it isn’t the only source that writes about murder, and it is an informative book about a true story.…

Books are challenged and banned for many reasons. One book that has been challenged many times is This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki. Although it does have some mature themes, it should not be banned due to the fact that many adolescents go through, or have gone through, similar things in their lives and it can help them see that other people understand what they are going through. Also it talks about the taboo topics we don’t talk about in society, or which could be important to their lives.…

After examining the story and all it has to hold I have seen why it has been banned; Religious reasons, smoking, and non popular language. I believe that these are the causes of the banning. For our first reason, religion is an active part of banned books being banned. From an article that I have found it states; "The other, most popular, reasons behind censorship attempts is that some find it 'irreligious'."…

There were at least 6,364 challenges of certain books to be banned in the years from 1990 – 2000. Book banning should be allowed because, some books may teach young children messages, content and materials that they aren’t ready to learn or know about, and even though some people think it violates the First Amendment. The reason society bans books is because they do not want children to know about sexual content, offensive or coarse language, and things that go against some religious beliefs. These are some reasons society decides to ban books. Part of why society bans certain books is because of sexual content.…

There are the main things such as being sexually explicit, having vulgar language, or not being suited for that age group. Then there are others that are banned for the talk of the extraterrestrial and witchcraft. In the many years people have been challenging books, many have made it to court such as Minarcini v. Strongsville City School District, Mozert v. Hawkins County Board of Education, and one of the most famous, Board of Education v. Pico. All of these cases were brought up because someone had a problem with the writing of a novel. Pico was mainly brought up for religious reasons against books such as Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks and Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

There are countless numbers of books in the world, all of which drastically vary in content, size and quality. Despite all of the disparate traits between them, this drive to relay another’s view on life is shared among all literature. However, there are many individuals that seek to suppress these views by banning books from libraries and schools. This desire to ban and suppress an author’s interpretation could arise from a variety of factors: differing ideological viewpoints, aversion to graphic content, or a distaste of a book’s “offensive” subject matter to name a few.…
