People came from far and wide to try their hand at finding gold, most were unsuccessful. The diggers who did come to Australia would usually have to leave their families behind because it was too dangerous but they would sometimes bring their sister to do the cooking and cleaning for them. Not all the diggers were me, about one-quarter of the diggers on the gold field in 1852 were women. Due to the fact that their was so many nationalities and countries that came for the gold rush people from the same countries would often Pitch their tents together in a circle and would eat and sleep together. One of the countries that lots of people came from was China. The number of Chinese on the goldfields grew quickly from 4000 in 1854 to 50000 in 1860. The goldfields were overrun with Chinese and everyone else hated it, they soon started to rebel against the Chinese and make their lives difficult. Everyone that came to the goldfields knew the risk of having no food and minimal shelter but they risked it to win big.
Australia is a truly amazing place made up of so many different types of people, from such different walks of life. We are a country made that started from one fleet of convicts and it has grown to become the fantastic place we know of today. The convicts started the colony then the free settlers helped Australia become a nation then came the gold rush that sparked the migration
