What will I do as a teacher?
As a teacher, I will positively influence students and school culture. As school culture changes, societies begin to change. This means that a teacher’s influence (whether good or bad) ultimately impacts society and possibly the world because their students are going out and influencing others. If a teacher leaves a positive impact on a student and the student goes on to change the world, the teacher has some small part in having encouraged that change. Naturally, the opposite can also occur. If a teacher negatively affects a student, the student might never reach their full potential because they lost hope and dropped out of school. Such influence, requires me to be a positive role model both in and out of classroom.
I will do more than teach the curriculum; I will build character in my students. If a student is brilliant but acts like a jerk, they will miss out on true happiness and possibly success as well. As Paul put it in 1 Corinthians 13:2-3, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” As a teacher, I must instill character into my students so that they can navigate the rough waters of society and cooperate considerately with others.
