2. Identify and discuss the specific (a) ideals and expectations of masculinity and femininity that were valued in the town of Glen Ridge and (b) the specific sex-gender roles that accompanied those ideals. According to anthropologist Peggy Sanday, the ideology of male supremacy is built on a foundation of rigid sex-gender roles for males and for females. The ideal of being a male in our society grants superiority over the other gender, female.…
In her lecture, Erin Runions, began by explained that in the bible disgust starts as disgust toward an ethnic group. This disgust then becomes disgust toward different kinds of sexual practices. Next, she argues that in America, the intuitive reaction to gay sex is one of disgust and she wants to convert that disgust into humor thinking with affect theory. Affect theory is an unconscious movement in the body felt physically and that feeling is then labeled as emotion. From this she argues that society teaches people what is disgusting.…
After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…
Teaching provides one the chance to mentor students in areas outside the scope of a classroom whether through coaching a sport or sponsoring a club. Mostly, teachers have the chance each day to make a lasting impression on someone else. Teachers have the opportunity to be strong, positive influences on 100s of students over the course of a career. Not many professions provide that.” (“Why do I want to teach?”…
Throughout my life I have always been around teachers. From experience I’ve known the good and the bad, public and private education. Each teacher is distinct, as they have all come from different schools and ways of life. But, for the duration of my 12 years of education, certain individuals have constantly shown through. I have always cherished english educators.…
I desired a profession in which I could make a positive impact on the lives of many; therefore, I recently decided to embark on the exciting journey of becoming an educator. I can easily…
In the article All the Things We Are written by Professor Lori-Anne Dolloff, we discover how inspiring teachers can balance their multiple identities in teaching. In this article readers are able to explore the various identities one has and how they play an important role in shaping future educators. Through the teacher educators realization of our changeable identities, allowing students to explore what type of teacher we strive to be and understanding how to use our emotions as a means of constructing our teacher identities, we would be propelled towards becoming an educator who is able to always evolve. Our identities are always constantly changing due to our identity consisting of multiple choir voices and our image of a “perfect” teacher…
1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…
The occupation of becoming an educator is not one that should be taken lightly, shaping the minds of young students is something that is key for the future of American success. That being said, obtaining the necessary degree in order to be able to teach is not as easy as some might think. The discourse community of educators is one that is very diverse and plentiful, and once one has taken the necessary steps to become an educator it is an extremely rewarding profession. The Discourse Community of education majors is huge and full of many smaller Discourse Communities which make up the most broad one.…
Since around 1991, the thought of reforming America’s education system has invaded an immense amount of citizens’ minds. Many believe that the academic program we all know as the norm should make a change, such as XQ America, and their Super School campaign. XQ was co-founded by Russlynn Ali and Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of Steve Jobs. While XQ America focuses on the improvement of high school, I personally believe the education system as a whole should be reconsidered. As an aspiring teacher, I believe I can reform America’s schooling method in various ways, such as ensuring I teach effectively and incorporating STEM techniques.…
Frequently, teachers status is both devalued in the larger society and elevated in terms of their potential to change society.” (Beyerbach, 2010) Louanne Johnson and her students are a great depiction of the theme dangerous…
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “a teacher is on that teachers, especially; a person whose job is to teach students about certain subjects”. Often times in our society, teachers are taken for granted and disregarded, likewise many see them as attention centered individuals. A teacher is not one who goes to college in order to lecture at the front of a classroom, instead a teacher is anybody who takes the initiative to take time out of their day in order to brighten that of others. Teachers are those who lead by example and care for their students, while taking each lesson deeper to provide a better future for those who inhale knowledge. Teachers have always been around, but to many people they are only present in school.…
I believe that teaching is an art that is not capable by just anyone. I believe it is a calling, a lifestyle, and that it acts as a special role in society. Since the beginning of time, teachers have been respected and viewed as knowledgeable, but it is unfortunate that there are people out there today who don’t currently feel that way. Teaching is special, teaching is important, and most of all, teaching is influential. Teaching is a proclamation to the world that you’re passionate about something and that you’re willing to share that part of yourself with others.…
In order to be a successful, inspiring and powerful teacher, educators need a game plan ready the minute they walk into the classroom. Before entering the classroom, these strategies and courses of action need much deliberation and then reflection to ensure the most positive effect on students. Although these plans will change with time, having an overall course of direction with purposes desired to achieve, the rigorous challenges and opportunities that will inevitably occur and ultimately how to implement these things in teaching to fulfill an educational vision. All inspiring and active teachers have certain reasons why they feel the need to contribute to the world of formal education. Many of these reasons overlap with others, while other…
When I enrolled in this course, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. It was not until I had begun implementing the concepts with the students in my field placement when my student asked me "Miss Meghann, why are you so nice to everyone?" then I knew I need to be a teacher. If I have a student who has to ask me why I am nice to all students in the school, it makes me wonder what these children are hearing and seeing from their teachers. My experiences with my teachers have greatly influenced my philosophy on education while most of my experiences were positive, I believe my negative experiences affected me on a deeper level.…
