Although I knew from the start that I wanted to be a teacher, I know this experience has changed me. At Fireside Elementary school, I was able to validate my love for teaching and my desire to become a teacher. Encouraging the kids and making a difference in the classroom was thrilling. While working in the classroom, I learned to never judge a kid by their grades. Some students have a harder time with certain subjects. The kids are extremely intelligent, but grades can’t always separate the most intelligent to the less. Moreover, in the classroom, learning disabilities were easier to knowledge. The field experience changed me in an admirable way; I can visualize how kids comprehend information in the classroom and what I can do to help them

After watching all of the available videos for the Field Experience Summary, I chose High School Biology, Part 2 as my favorite video. I selected this video because the teacher displays great knowledge of her students, she has provided wonderful materials for her activity, and she has the standards and objectives clearly stated on the whiteboard. In addition to the reasons previously stated, I chose this video because she covered a topic in my subject area. What initially intrigued me to watch the High School Biology, Part 2 video, is that I knew I might gain some insight into what I will be teaching in three short years. At the beginning of the video, it shows the teacher walking over to a male student and talking briefly with him before…

Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

Throughout much of the research I did regarding the diversity within Harrisonburg High School, I found that many of the numbers accurately depicted what I saw during my first Field Experience. Harrisonburg High School as well as Harrisonburg city in general, are very diverse areas and are home to a plethora of different people with various backgrounds. The graphs above are just a small portion of the great variety of people who attend Harrisonburg High School. The first graph illustrates the different ethnicity groups the students of Harrisonburg High are a part of. The data was collected by the school district and only includes six subgroups, one of which has a population of zero (Hawaiian).…

I attended Jane Addams Elementary School for my field experience hours. As I was attending this school, I started to think about when I was a student teacher at my elementary school. My experiences with both schools were different because each school had a different setup for how they wanted to teach the class. My freshman and sophomore year of high school, I had volunteered to do student teaching at my elementary school, and it was really tough for me because that was my first time ever teaching students at a fifth-grade level.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

This week during my field experience, I got the amazing opportunity to go to Fort Yates and visit the shelter down there. I went down there with an advocate who has her license in social work. That was an amazing opportunity because I learned a lot from being able to talk to her about social work. I found it interesting that when discussing what we learned during college, that there was overlap despite going to different colleges.…

As established in our first discussion post, my field placement with Community Shares is a macro focus placement and individuals or clients are not served at the agency location; thereby diminishing concerns of safety. With that said, as part of my experience with the field placement, I will travel with my supervisor to agencies that Community Shares supports and will have direct contact with various population groups in various types of settings. When I encounter off site visits my risk and concern for safety will increase. To minimize my risk when participating in off site visits, I will familiarize myself with the agency and location of the planned visit. Also, I will be traveling with another individual to maximize safety.…

A teacher’s goal is to maximize his or her student’s potential. Traditionally, the biggest challenge for students with disabilities was to meet their needs in the areas of social, behavioral, cognitive, perceptive and motor skills (Adebisi et al. 14). A learning disability is defined by the Schwab Foundation as a person who is diagnosed by a professional with a difficulty as a result of a CNS dysfunction in the areas or reading, writing, math, science, reasoning speaking, or listening. In order to meet the diverse needs of these students, they were traditionally removed from the mainstream classroom and placed in a separate classroom to learn. Although this was the best way to meet the students’ academic needs, their social needs were grossly…
