A 2012 study by The RAND Corporation, a leading research nonprofit, found that “teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling.” Teachers play the role of educating students not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. In many instances, teachers provide important role modeling for students who may not have it at home, and school itself provides stability and consistency for high needs students. Teaching is so much more than just giving pointless assignments and incredibly hard tests that make students question, “What’s the point?” It is a career which helps shape students to be the best that they can be and it takes a very special person to do that. There will be times where children will see their teachers a bit more than they might see their parents during most days. If society wants the country’s best and brightest college graduates to see teaching as a desirable career, it’s essential to offer pay incentives high enough to attract the talent we seek—high-performers who might otherwise be drawn to higher paying and better respected professions (Alfuth). The low pay causes teachers to have to work second, even third jobs, in order to support their families. The low pay is the main reason why teachers leave the profession. With salaries beginning at only $39,580 and averaging at $52,965, there’s no wonder why teachers are leaving the profession. In speaking with many teachers, as well as thinking about my own future as a teacher, it is apparent that there is a correlation between feeling valued and receiving an appropriate salary for the hard work that you do. I would like to become a teacher because I want to educate children and help others, however, I feel that teachers should be able to support their own families while still doing what they
