Five educational philosophies developed as way people believe students should learn and grow in a classroom. The five educational philosophies are essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism. All five differ from the focus of study and teacher’s role. Essentialism believes the purpose of education is to teach key elements of core concepts so that all students have access to basic (“essential”) knowledge. Perennialism believes that focus should be on literature and art. Progressivism believes in learning through experiences. Social Reconstructionism is an educational philosophy that emphasizes social justice and curriculum promoting social reform. Reconstructionist believes schools must produce an agenda for social change. ED1320 slaps you in the face with the reality of being a teacher in a 21st-century classroom. I declared my major in Elementary Education the day I met with Terry Forge for Spring Registration in November. In all honesty, I am afraid of being a first-year teacher, my anxiety is really high. I just wonder what will happen if I fail as a teacher and what could go wrong in the future. My only question I have is how did you know that you wanted to teach Secondary Education instead of Elementary Education? It a constant battle I have in my head every day and I am very torn about it.
