This approach was conceptulised and developed by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 1995 for the purpose of addressing problems facing the health care system in the United States of America. The philosophical concepts of the approach is based on creating a system that will involve shared learning among several number of teams working together to improve quality of care, efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system; and also with the aim of scaling-up the approach in other settings. In other words, the approach emphasizes the deployment of different groups of practitioners from various health care organizations to address one aspect affecting their quality of care. The outcome of improvement collaborative is the adaptation and spreading evidence-based generated knowledge to multiple contexts for replication.
