It is said that "Rome burned while Nero fiddled." In 64 AD, when he was in control of the Roman Empire, Nero asked the Senate for a plot of land upon which he could build his masterpiece, the Domus Aurea, or the Golden House. The Senate denied his proposal; this angered the emperor to no end, and soon after, the exact place which he was refused mysteriously burned to the ground. Only four of Rome's fourteen districts were not damaged by the flames. Immediately, the citizens of Rome suspected Nero to be the culprit of the crime.…

The sculpture in Unknown #4 depicts the upper body of a middle-aged man. That the figure shows the imperfections which come with age suggests that the sculpture is of Roman origin rather than Greek. Carved from marble, the sculpture extends to the lower chest of the man, just above the solar plexus. The chest and shoulders are soft and lightly defined: the pectoral muscles are visible only as gentle contours, and the shoulders slope downwards in fleshy smoothness. The head of the figure is carved with intricate detail, especially in the hair, beard, eyes, nose, and facial wrinkles.…
Walking through one of the basements of a dorm building on the UMN campus, the first thought that came to mind was the placement and pattern of the tile. Unlike most tile, this flooring was a particular pattern that’s use was essential in building one of the largest domes in the world; herringbone or spina pesce meaning “spine of the fish” (Great Cathedral Mystery). The largest masonry dome in the world sits on top of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral in Florence, Italy and was built mainly by the master mason—and later capomaestro, an architect-in-chief—of the name Filippo Brunelleschi. Ingeniously designed, the dome continues to awe scientists and tourists alike—in addition—archeologist, architects, and engineers alike question the process…
‘Augustus’ extraordinary position…is defined in art’ and so his iconography programme should be taken at face value in order to identify key motifs and themes within it and how this supposedly reflected Augustus’ rule. However, nowadays scholars debate about the intricacies of said iconography and try to understand it textually rather than by sight. The importance of iconography was larger in Augustus’ time in comparison now, partly because it is estimated that only 10% of the population was literate leaving the remaining 90% having to receive information via imagery. Another reason is that its ‘political imagery…had little meaning outside [Roman] borders’ and so iconography within Rome would have had very specific messages.…
After learning some more about Ancient World History, I believe that the Agricultural Revolution, Political Systems, and the civilization of Ancient Rome have most influenced the Modern World the most. Not only were these events in history very major, but they also had a drastic impact on the life we live today. These revolutionary practices affected the Modern World in our everyday lives as much as recent practices. The Agricultural Revolution occurred during the Neolithic Age and is when people finally learned that they could farm many different resources. During this time, people didn’t settle and had to migrate frequently for food but now, the people were finally able to settle.…

When I set out to the Metropolitan Museum in New York I did not expect to have as much fun as I did, nor did I expect to be there for over six hours. The Metropolitan has a vast collection and some of the most unique artifacts I can ever remember seeing at a museum. From the Greek and Roman art, to the sarcophaguses from Roman and Egyptian lands, it even has a reconstructed pyramid, and I didn't even get to experience more than half of the artifacts. One enormous piece that caught my attention, centered in the middle of the Greek and Roman art on the main floor was a marble sarcophagus lid.…
What was Roman medicine like? In the time of Ancient Rome, it was still widely believed that disease and harm came from the disfavor of the gods. Though most doctors were either ridiculously expensive or just fake, some practices were genuine. The Romans were some of the first people to follow hygenic medical practices, such as boiling thier tools and isolating patients to stop the spread of contaigens.…
1 ANCIENT ROME The history of Ancient Rome is divided into "three broad categories: the kingdom of Rome (beginning in the 8th century B.C.), the period of the Republic (beginning in 509 BC) and the period of the Empire (beginning in 27 BC)." There was the expansion of Rome, and politics was a game for the wealthy political families. There have been different views about this Roman era and what constitutes "good society?" It is the hope that this essay will allow the reader clarity and understanding this time in history. 2 Amitai Etzioni defines community as a "combination of two elements: A) a web of affect-laden relationships among a group of individuals, relationships; B) A measure of commitment to a set of shared values, norms,…
You may believe that the United States as it is today is very original and different but honestly it’s not. Most of the ideas we have displayed throughout our country originated from Ancient Rome. Some people actually call us thieves because of all the ideas and traits we have took from them. You may not notice it but we have based lots of behaviors on their culture. Ancient Rome is actually one of the closest civilizations that resemble the United States.…
If the Romans had left their city in 386 BCE, their fate might have come to an abrupt end. After the Gauls destroyed their city, the Romans were given building materials that were provided at public expense, that every citizen should rebuild his home, as long as he accomplished his home in under a year. It was often said that Rome’s ramshackle layout and its chaotic streets in the city were direct result of a rushed reconstruction. So also appears that the Romans, as part of this rebuild, now finally decided to build a sturdy city wall. The wall was five miles in circumference with nineteen gates, embracing all seven-hills of Rome.…
