Rome was very overpopulated, in an area that was only four times as large as the city of Greensboro, North Carolina it consisted of 1 million people. This overpopulation caused the streets to be cluttered and noisy. When you were walking you had to take precautions because it was very dangerous. The rich people lived in villas while the less fortunate lived in insulae. Villas were more like houses they were spaced out and well-built while insulae were poorly built, tightly packed apartments with only one room for the family to live in. Without the Roman Empire we would not have concrete. As much as we use concrete today, this is amazing to know who created this mixture which is actually strong enough to make long-standing buildings out of. This concrete mixture was also used to create the first roads which we again can thank the Romans for. Imagine if we did not have roads at all in this country, wouldn’t travel be difficult? The concrete that we use today has been modified and is a lot more durable and is stronger than the mixture the Romans used but it is generally the same idea. The Romans also had the first aqueducts. These aqueducts dispersed an entire water supply to the Roman Empire. This invention had helped us configure our current water system. Imagine a world without plumbing, disgusting
