Still now Greek Theatre is used to speak to vast audiences all over the world. It is still studied in classrooms and lecture halls everywhere. Dramatic interpretations are ever changing and new translations are continuously being adapted. Greek plays where written 2,500 years ago and there themes are and will always to valid to the society that they are studied in. Most of the information and research we have on Greek Theatre is from the plays themselves. We can also gather information about characters, set, themes and context from authors from the time, vase paintings that have been discovered and other source materials. Athenians dressed up as satyrs for the springtime Anthesteria festival that celebrated Dionysus’s arrival and the new wine. Satyrs where light hearted relief for audiences the characters behaved badly, excessively eating and drinking and trying to find sexual gratification. They wore very little clothes and full head masks, they were half-man half-animal, usually a horse with an erect phallus. The costumes that they wore where ridiculous and they wore a sewn on leather phallus they language they used was vulgar and rude gaining their laughs from explicit sexual humor. Masks where used throughout comedy and where bigger and more distorted than life like faces. They also used padding in their costumes to accentuate comedic body
