“Still Life With Iris”

I saw the play “Still Life With Iris” in Turpin High School’s auditorium. I was in crew but watched the full run through of the show, and witnessed most of the show closing night, Saturday, February 4th. The show was originally written by Steven Dietz, and Turpin’s play was directed by Lauren Keen. They play was about a girl named Iris who lived on an island called Nocturno where they made everything. She had her past coat stolen and was taken to the Great Goods island. Here she met many other character and together they got all of their coats back from the great goods and returned to Nocturno, where Iris finally got to meet her long lost dad. The shows acting was spot on. The whole cast was extremely good

They did this by having a ramp and signs with bright different colored paint on them in Nocturno to make the mood very upbeat and happy. While in Nocturno, they only had one of each item, and all the colors were very bland, which made the mood colder and less at ease. Some props also helped add to the development of the characters. The button that Iris had really helped to form the plot because it foreshadowed what would happen in the end with her and her family. All of the movements by the actors/actresses were very smooth and I think the ramp onstage helped to create dimension when the characters were moving around. The lighting was another aspect which contribute to the mood of the play. It was oncisitanly a soft lighting while the characters were in Nocturno, which help portray the hominess of Nocturnal island. The spotlit on Mr. Matternot during the preshow helped to draw attention to him, and highlight the fact of how he stood out from the rest of the Nocturno natives. The costumes and makeup were really what tied in the whole essence of the play. The costumes were also a very important piece in the performance once the plot pretty much revolves around their past coast. These coats are what held each character in Nocturnos memory, and so they all have a bunch of patches on each one. Some coasts were long and some short, but they all had patches which related and went with the theme of the

The production Anon(ymous) by Naomi Iizuka was produced by Playscripts, Inc. Anon(ymous) was shown in the John Anthony Theatre at Collin College and was attended on the 8th of October, 2016. Location of seating in the theatre was to the left facing the stage where the seats were furthest and slightly elevated. An advantage to this position in the theatre was having the ability to see over others who chose to be seated closer to the stage, so the entire set was able to be seen in its whole. Due to this position in the theatre a big disadvantage was not being able to see facial expressions of the actors and actresses too well. Anon(ymous) opens with refugees recalling what they remember from their homeland.…

The play follows a mother and her two daughters, their maid, and a worker on the orchard as the women of the family try to figure out a way to save their pecan orchard (El Nogalar). The family is out of money but do not want to sell the orchard to a cartel because they will just cut down the Pecan trees and plant drugs. However, if the family doesn’t sell their land then the cartels are likely to just take it.…

I found the use of dramatic lighting to play the largest role in the ghost scenes where inflicting fear was intended. In singular, flashing fluorescent colors of white and green gave great detail. The sound designer used simulated reality to portray realistic sounds in the play as man-made, and not technological. This made the play feel legitimate, and less like a performance, as if I was observing it in the real world. The set, however, was the most enticing of all the visual effects.…
