After looking through the artworks on Google Art Project, I wanted to show how different artists imagined what angel’s looked like. I specifically used the word "angel" in my search engine to find three different interpretations of the same idea. I chose the following three pieces that show how different images of angels have been drawn.
The first image I chose is A Group of Angels in Glory done by the Italian artist, Luca, in 1607, (early Italian, 17th century Renaissance). The work depicts angels as chubby, cherub like babies. The angels are etched with a dark color into a light paper. This etching measures exactly 13 1/16 x 10 inches. In this piece, the artist engraved the images into the paper. They are following what looks like sunbeams or rays of light. The formal elements of design Luca used to capture the images of the angels are Texture and Surface and Color. Etching is visual; you can see and feel a product of etching. The way they are positioned gives you the illusion that they are in motion. This piece is easy to understand because the images are neat. He used lines and shading to engrave into the parcel. You can tell the etching was done on a texturized piece of paper because you can see the rough texture of the paper wherever he shaded. This brings me to how he used color. It was not necessary for Luca to use a palette of colors create a vision of peace and harmony. In this case, he made the images using simple dark colored ink onto a lighter surface. The detailing was impressive and there was not much left to imagine. The principles of design and composition that Luca used were Proportion/Scale and Movement. The image is proportionate because as the angels move upward and get farther up into the clouds, they diminish in size giving
