Visual Analysis Paper
After looking through the artworks on Google Art Project, I wanted to show how different artists imagined what angel’s looked like. I specifically used the word "angel" in my search engine to find three different interpretations of the same idea. I chose the following three pieces that show how different images of angels have been drawn.
The first image I chose is A Group of Angels in Glory done by the Italian artist, Luca, in 1607, (early Italian, 17th century Renaissance). The work depicts angels as chubby, cherub like babies. The angels are etched with a dark color into a light paper. This etching measures exactly 13 1/16 x 10 inches. In this piece, the artist engraved the images into the paper. Luca etched a group of angels in flight swaying and kissing, in

They are following what looks like sunbeams or rays of light. The formal elements of design Luca used to capture the images of the angels are Texture and Surface and Color. Etching is visual; you can see and feel a product of etching. The way they are positioned gives you the illusion that they are in motion. This piece is easy to understand because the images are neat. He used lines and shading to engrave into the parcel. You can tell the etching was done on a texturized piece of paper because you can see the rough texture of the paper wherever he shaded. This brings me to how he used color. It was not necessary for Luca to use a palette of colors create a vision of peace and harmony. In this case, he made the images using simple dark colored ink onto a lighter surface. The detailing was impressive and there was not much left to imagine. The principles of design and composition that Luca used were Proportion/Scale and Movement. The image is proportionate because as the angels move upward and get farther up into the clouds, they diminish in size giving

Fontana’s Christ with Symbols of the Passion can also be compared to Rosso Fiorentino’s Dead Christ with Angels. Both paintings came out of the Mannerist period during 1525 and 1600. Dead Christ with Angels is a prime example of this form of artistic expansion. Both artworks can be characterized by strong, unusual color combinations, crowded or ambiguous space, warm central lighting and elongated or often twisting figures. The comparison between the two artworks is almost identical.…

The angels symbolize Jesus as the only way to Heaven. As the blood ran from His face, the thunder roared the sky grew dark, and the earth trembled before Jesus died. Why would the earth react and tremble and the atmosphere be moved so violently right before Jesus died? A lot was happening in the spiritual realm while Jesus hang on the cross I believe the demons and devil pondered and murmured while they waited for Jesus spirit to release from his body then took Him to hell in our stead.…

While both artworks feature women, each artist used very different methods to get their message across. They both use a light source, are differently made, and they both use women to display a role of power and elegance. Both Bernini and Ingres use light sources to accentuate details in their pieces. In Bernini's sculpture, the light is falling onto the angel and St. Teresa. The way the light was falling above them can imply God is speaking to the angel to give the message to St. Teresa.…

The first artwork featuring Virna Lisi represented the women’s movement that caught attention from the public. That particular movement wanted to get rid of women’s traditional roles and make them become more like their gender counterparts, men. I feel like this shouldn’t be a thing in today’s society. I believe men and women should be unique in their own genders as that’s how we were created to be.…

Seven wedge-like shapes can be seen surrounding a portrait of Christ, who is displaying his wounds to the viewer, a ring of light encompasses around Christ and radiates out. Within the corners of the canvas are perfectly circular images depicting the “four last things”, Heaven, Hell, the Last Judgement and finally death. When viewed in its entirety the composition is revealed to be the eye of God; giving the viewer the impression that God is ever-watching. The wedge-like shapes demonstrate within them each sin; some which can be easily identified, the iconography being obvious and tame, another indication that this could potentially be an early work of Bosch, as it is a strong contrast to what has become synonymous with Bosch’s work who is widely credited with being the first surrealist with his depictions of bizarre creatures and strange…

Virgin and Child Enthroned was painted in the Thirteenth Century, or the Gothic Era, the artists of this time period borrowed from the Byzantine style which included, gold backgrounds, flat disc haloes, and very little to no depth. Due to this, Virgin and Child Enthroned is not really naturalistic, it’s almost stylized. The depth that is shown in Cimabue’s painting, is shown through overlapping figures, and vertical perspective, which makes the angels seem as if they are floating, instead of being planted on the ground. In contrast, Raphael uses chiaroscuro, and atmospheric perspective to create depth. Chiaroscuro, is the shading of forms to give them volume, or depth, and atmospheric perspective is used in landscapes to create the illusion of distance, by having things in the distance being blurred, and lighter, with less contrast.…
