Violent Video Games Lead To Violence Essay

In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not violence in video games is a direct cause of violent behavior. This topic was once again brought to debate in the article “Do Video Games Lead to Violence” when it was released that the 18-year old gunman from Munich, responsible for the death of nine people, commonly played and enjoyed first person shooter games. Those who are supporters of the claim that violent video games lead to violence say that there is a direct link to the shooting and his love of first person shooter games. However, the side against the claim refutes this statement excellently through their use of study and statistics. To start, the author begins to contradict previous statements of the proponents by discussing how violent video games do not actually cause violence, and how they may even lower it. Violent video games “may help reduce societal violence rather than increase it… Tracking both sales and crime rates, the authors discovered that general societal violence decreased in the weeks after the appearance of a new edition of a popular title”(Scutti 14 and 16.) Here, the author successfully disproves the proponents by proving violent video games may help to reduce violent activities. Kids are kept off the street because they are busy when violent games are released, ergo, lowering the crime rate. If violent video games were to cause violent actions, then crime rate would surely go up upon the release of a new title.
