Question 1 A positive classroom atmosphere creates academic, social, and emotional development in all learners especially those with emotional and behavior disorders. A caring teacher-student relationship is essential to the learning process. Research has shown that “developing supportive relationships with students; using social skills instruction that helps students learn skills for developing positive relationships with adults; learning about students’ backgrounds, interests, and lives; increasing one’s awareness of biases one has regarding students’ ethnicity, culture, and gender and how they can affect one’s interactions with students; and modeling appropriate behavior and expecting students to use appropriate behavior” can promote development and growth (Mihalas, Morse, Allsopp, & McHatton, 2009). The goal of social skills training is that students with emotional and behavior disorders will “produce socially acceptable learned behaviors such as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control (Kirk, Gallahger, & Coleman, 2015, p. 269).” Using role play to engage students with emotional and behavior disorders to develop targeted social skills in a stressful setting. These scenarios should be model after incidence that might take place in the day to day life of the student with emotional and behavior disorder. In the video, Ms. Shipman begins the role play by modeling the appropriate behavior. Then Ms. Shipman allows student to practice using the target social skills in a small group. To ensure the understanding of the social skill, Ms. Shipman observes the students, like Trisha, in the classroom and offer positive reinforcement when the student uses the target appropriate
