The biggest hurdle to accomplishing this feat is time. With so much training, lesson plan development and so on, setting aside time to meet with parents of EBD children seems like a daunting task. Especially if an educator limits themselves to only their “on the job” hours. Although that mindset is just horrible, as a mentor to countless students, one is never “off the job”. There is nothing wrong with quick correspondence, emails or a phone call, to get some quick information or ideas on how to redirect or divert an unwanted behavior or action. But to really bring the concept of a united front home, an educator must take time to meet face to face with the parents. Something as simple as grabbing a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop and discussing the student’s behavior, mannerisms, likes and dislikes. Families already have established procedures at home to help mitigate potential disruptions, so use the time to find out what they have …show more content…
Developing the classroom into a safe place and one of trust for all students is necessary, and with just a bit of effort, extremely rewarding, especially for EBD students. Bringing strategies and coping mechanisms familiar to the student from other professional settings and their home helps to provide the solid foundation of trust necessary for effective communication and learning. The life skills an educator gains further develops their own individualized pedagogical approach within their classroom. We must remember everyone in the classroom is affected by any disruption, just as the entire family is at home. Recognizing the impact inside and outside the classroom is a step in becoming a stronger advocate for students. After all, do we want to be the one sharing “horror stories” in the breakroom or the one sharing success stories and how you made a positive change and impact on not just your student, but their family as
