Everyday Mrs. Branson has her students engage in a class discussion. During her reading and writing lesson she has students talk about the feelings and emotions of the characters they have read about and what clues provide them with those conclusions. She discusses how the characters solved their problems or another way they could have responded to their situation. When students created their own story, they used a character chart to establish the character’s emotions, expressions, and social status. This allowed them to recognize their character’s emotions and how it affects how and what they do. Mrs. Branson emphasizes that her students are becoming self sufficient and that third grade is a growing transition in their lives. She expects them to be in charge of their behavior and learn to stop and calm down instead of acting out. When a student lied about finishing an assignment, Mrs. Branson addressed the lie right away. She responded to their mistake constructively and calm instead of getting angry. She acknowledge the students honesty and was pleased that the student spoke the truth, so Mrs. Brandon lessened the consequence. There are many benefits of implementing the SEL program into the classroom. I will use this program and model many of the Mrs. Branson’s techniques in my future classroom. SEL enriches student-teacher relationships and this relationship is at the heart of learning. Research shows that that students who experience a caring relationship with a teacher are more motivated to learn, and, hence, they enjoy school more and demonstrate greater academic success (Zakrzewski).
