Students are like snowflakes; they are unique in their own way. It would be really boring if they were all the same. According to Howard Gardner, students can learn in eight different intelligences. The eight intelligences include: linguistic, mathematical, spatial, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. Each person has their own way of learning and perceiving information based on their strengths (Multiple Intelligences, 2013). As educators, we need to be mindful of the diverse characteristics students bring to the classroom. For example, children come from different ethnic backgrounds, learn in a variety of ways, may have unique educational experiences or background knowledge, and varied levels of support at home. Educators must keep these factors in mind to successfully educate students.

When thinking about students’ needs, we need to look at each one of them as an individual and what is best for them according to the humanistic theory (Saul McLeod, 2015). Humanistic theory is applied in the classroom when teachers differentiate their lessons to meet the needs of all of their students. There are three ways to differentiate lessons. For the state of Illinois, there are three social- emotional goals for educators to refer to. “The goals are develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success, use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts” (Illinois Learning Standards, n.d.).
