Character development is essential in a character-driven literature, where the plot focuses not on the events themselves, but actually on their personality traits. This literary device is utilized step by step throughout literature in order to focus and clarify the crucial aspects about the character in a story. The story lines that move us most, the ones that will be trapped inside our minds decades later, are those inhabited by characters the reader can connect with on a deep emotional level. No one character can grasp in the course of a story what they need to learn in order to give in or overcome their own limitations and flaws without first undergoing rigorous trials. The bumpy path of individual growth and development a certain character …show more content…
In chapter 8 of the novel, there is a part that is of significance to Hrothgar character development. “This morality of his, this dignity, are they not of my work? What was he before me? Nothing! A swollen headed raider, full of outrage and dumb jokes and mead. I made him what he is now. Do I not have the right to test my own creation?” Towards the end, Hrothgar must depend on the aid of the Geats to kill the beast Grendel. Grendel has figured out that the king has found a way to intimated the other kings out of their treasury. Like what the Shaper was hoping for, Hrothgar examines the best of what 's available of his people and modifies it for his own desires. He realizes that he doesn 't feel the need to stick to the old rules of conduct. He 'd like to believe that they 're arrogant, babbling fools, but his own early observations convey why he has good reason to worry about what the humans can accomplish. Now if the so called "lower humans" like Ork and Unferth can reason, plot and devise a strategy well enough to unsettle the monster, just visualize how Grendel feels about a man like Hrothgar. Grendel realizes that Hrothgar might be the prime example of all humans because he has the capacity to step outside of the king mindset and find a way to enhance his own rule. Without any additional resources, Hrothgar alters all that is known about warfare during his time. He obviously knows that there is much chaos out there, but he doesn 't have the capability to restore order. He soon became a political schemer who will do anything if it meant achieving his goals, but he soon finds them without satisfaction. There are lots of enemies all over the kingdom that threaten the order of Hrothgar 's own kingdom, like Hrothulf, Grendel, and other upcoming warlords, but Hrothgar can not seem to think his way out of this dark corner in which there is no

Graham Baker’s adaptation of Beowulf: the unheroic hero. The epic poem, Beowulf, has been the source of inspiration to an incredible amount of artistic pieces: films, novels, songs, comic books, video games and operas. Due to the nature of the poem, every adaptation that has ever been made is different from the other, but most of them respect the epic hero prototype. Even though Baker fills the gaps of indeterminacy in a weird and twisted way, what the film brings up as interesting is that his version of Beowulf does not follow such prototype: Beowulf's personality and motivations are essentially different from those of the poem's hero.…

Hrothgar has defeated all of his enemies and has become the most powerful ruler in the kingdom of the Danes. Therefore, he is able to control the historical narrative that is told to his citizens, with the Shaper as his mouthpiece. The Shaper’s story about Hrothgar’s supposed heroic ancestor Scyld Shelfing only serves to increase the king’s credibility, by portraying him as the descendant of heroes. Grendel’s later encounters are similar, with the Shaper telling greatly exaggerated accounts of the beauty of Danish society. This optimistic and light-hearted view of life propagated by the Shaper contrasts heavily with Grendel’s decidedly nihilistic and gloomy outlook, which only serves to anger him…

The addition of particular characters to the film Beowulf and Grendel alters the portrayal of Hrothgar because it reveals that he murdered an innocent man—Grendel’s father. Although the reason why Hrothgar killed Grendel’s dad is not revealed until the end of the film, the audience of the 21st century can sense that Hrothgar is malicious by his actions towards other characters. For instance, in the movie Beowulf and Grendel, Beowulf questions Hrothgar about Grendel’s actions, and Hrothgar responds to him that Grendel “has not killed any children… [but is a] crazy troll”, which is why he is attacking the mead hall. This portrays a Hrothgar that is deceiving and malicious because he hides the truth—he killed Grendel’s father because he stole a fish—from Beowulf to get him to finish his job of killing Grendel.…

When Beowulf first arrives at the coast near Heorot, he introduces his tribe to the coast guard, saying "we belong by birth to the Geat people / and owe allegiance to Lord Hygelac" (Beowulf 260-261).…
