Introduction
The workplace is a setting filled with verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication can consist of creating a set business plan for the future to asking a colleague if they want to have lunch. Embedded in verbal communication is nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is an important and innate quality that affects how we feel while also expressing it. Exploring the impact of nonverbal communication is important in the research field as well as business because by exploring a productive way of communicating between supervisors and employees, businesses can run better such that there will be less conflict and confusion. It is necessary to understand how something is said has more impact than what is actually said. When communicating messages to colleagues in an exciting and enthusiastic way, the message will have a greater impact and will be perceived as more important. “Positive nonverbal communication helps colleagues in the workplace build positive business relationships” (Tiwari, 2015). In other words, if something is said negatively, it can cause conflict and other disturbances in the workplace. Physically attractive people are treated better overall seen through their acceptance of more social attention and prosocial behavior given by others. This shows that physical attractiveness “extends beyond mere ‘opinions’ of others and permeate actual actions toward others” (Langlois, et al. 2000, p. 401). For example, in a study of MBA graduates, they found that attractive men receive higher starting salaries, while attractive women do not (Toledano, 2013). In general, attractive candidates are seen as more likeable. Kwan and Trautner (2011) defines the term “lookism” as a phenomenon in which attractive employees and candidates have the upper hand in the workplace because they are more readily promotes and paid more so than their less attractive

    Taking enjoyment in looking at beauty is not lookism. As stated by Jeff Winthrop, a 3rd year student in Chiang’s story participating in a student debate, “There are plenty of times when looking at an attractive face doesn’t hurt anyone” (Chiang, 247). It is when people start treating others differently and unfairly that becomes a serious issue and that is when it becomes lookism.
