Nonverbal Communication Analysis When you are communicating with others, you are not only using your words to get a message across; you are using hand gestures too. Communicating without words is called nonverbal communication (DeVito p.109). In this assignment I will be focusing on nonverbal and listening signs. I will be analysing body message, affect display, and how listening is displayed between two people. I will start with the body message. Most people look at this before interacting with anyone. Body message is displayed by body gestures and body appearance (DeVito p.113). I decided to focus my analysis based on a young couple eating at a Mexican restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. This couple was very well dressed. The young lady was wearing a nice lime green skirt that went down a little passed her knees, a white plain shirt with a red short cardigan, and some black heel pumps. The man was wearing some khaki pants, a plaid green button up shirt, and some nice brown shiny shoes. By the way they were dressed and since it was Sunday afternoon I suppose they were coming from church or simply were having a nice date. The man showed focus when he was only staring at his partner while she was speaking. Then as she kept on talking he was nodding and smiling showing his enthusiasm toward the conversation and displaying understatement. Finally, his response, when he expressed his big excitement with his body and facial gestures.
Sometimes there is no need for verbally knowing how a person is feeling. Their nonverbal communication such as, hand and facial gestures can often tell you the same thing. This assignment is a great example of that. I may not have been able to really hear what the couple was talking about, but I was able to notice that they were having a good, happy
