Analysis of the problem
The problem that we have come to solve with this assignment is that Express Logistics has been going though some employee issues. Looking at it from the standpoint of the Union Stewart which was my position, was that understaffing, high injury rate, and doing larger volumes of work in the same amount of time with less employees was causing many issues in the workplace. The team became understaffed due to the previous contract negotiations that saw the union giving up nearly 50 employees but on top of that, management had outsourced another 50 light duty and janitorial positions. The concern of management surrounding the rising costs of hiring even more workers, as well they are aggravated about the calls to the Ministry of Labour by employees. They want the injury rates lowered and the calls to stop and think that the approach they will use will be to use the integrative bargaining tactics. The negotiations fit within this model of bargaining, given that it used when negotiating both health and safety issues and rest breaks. The union side of the negotiation had agreed before coming into the bargaining sessions what they were looking for with the negotiation and what would be best for the employees. During the bargaining session, first the union side first stated their issues, laying out the groundwork on how the session was to go. Management presented their case in an organized fashion to try to achieve their goal. They brought forward their concerns and wants, which though were different from the union desires, they were not so far apart that there would be no meeting of the minds. Both sides of the discussion appeared to agree with internally, which helped the negotiation. Given that this was a health and safety issues, the two sides used integrative bargaining tactics.
