Hip Hop is just poetry with music played in the background. An example familiar to us would be “dear mama” by Tupac. The verses have rhyme, enjambment, alliteration like “mama made miracles”, imagery like thanksgiving dinner and selling drugs, onomatopoeia like “whoopin´”, repetition of “you are appreciated” and apostrophe of Tupac’s father and Tupac's siblings and drug dealer friends.I believe that all these poetic devices qualify hip hop songs to be considered a genre of poetry. …show more content…
The majority of hip hop was written by people of colour in the low income bracket of society, unlike most of the academically acclaimed poetry which was written by white men who were usually rich and powerful. The biggest names in hip hop are Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Kanye West, Jay Z and Dr. Dre, all people who were born and raised in the “hood” and made their way to the top. The most academically recognised names in poetry are Shakespeare, John Keats, John Donne. All of them were white men who were wealthy and privileged.
