Over time, the immigration rate of people entering the U.S. has shown a significant pattern; those who migrate tend to be parents. As a result, these adults take the role of being transnational parents which has been critically commented on in our societies. In fact, commentators such as Parreñas, Dreby, Hondagneu-Sotelo and Avila have suggested that each culture establishes specific gender roles that parents strive to achieve. Cultures that derive from places such like Mexico and the Philippines, expect women to nurture their children, while the “father’s duty is to show children how to act honorably in the face of adversity”(Parrenas year published:page number). In Dreby’s interviews with transnational mothers, there were some who mentioned about crying for “two months” because they miss their children(Dreby Year Published:Page Number) However, after they stop showing lack of emotion towards the subject, they are accused of not caring for their children. While not showing any external signs of pain may seem like transnational mothers have no emotional intimacy with their children, “lingering over the painful sacrifice of separation only intensifies the emotional hardships of providing the family with material securities”(Parrenas Year Published:Page Number). Thus, not showing signs of suffering is just another method of coping with the “emotional tensions”(Parrenas Year Published:Page Number). Dwelling over the separation that they have with their children would cause transnational mothers to be unhealthy and might even lead to depression. Therefore, the ties of cultural mother ideologies placed on transnational mothers are very close minded. The commentators who use this dominant ideology to judge transnational mothers don’t take in account the reasons why they don’t abide to the expectation.
