In class, we discussed what it felt like when a coworker was inspirational. There was a consensus that these leaders all made us strive to be better in one way or another. We felt inspired to put in extra effort, enthusiastic about the future, and optimistic. Regardless of which aspect affected us the most, they pulled out of us extra effort, reduced stress, a sense of empowerment, and general satisfaction with our work space. …show more content…
The best part about TL is that, unlike other leadership models, it doesn’t require authority over someone to affect them. My coworkers will be responding to the simple human interaction we share, and not some career-based stimuli. By developing my communication skills, optimism, and vision of the future I will be better equipped to paint a picture in the mind of my subordinates. Before delving further into leadership and management theories and styles it is good to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p221) state that ‘managers are people who do things right and leaders are people that do the right thing.’ Yukl (2002, p7) goes on to suggest that leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how it can be done effectively, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish the shared objectives. However, Stodgill (1974:7) powerfully stated that ‘there are as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have tried to define it.’ Although there are varying definitions to leadership…
