New technologies make it difficult for leaders. Today, electronic media is available, it allows for leaders and their employees to work in different locations called ‘virtual leadership’ where distance technologies of many forms are involved through telephone, email, texting, or video chats. As a result, followers feel as though they are just a tool to get the job done. They aren’t getting that social interaction that allows a leader to help mentor and develop them to be more successful. There is a lack of teamwork also which can cause loneliness. In this situation, a leader needs to try harder to create and maintain relationships with their employees. One suggestion may be to go beyond writing simple words while emailing an employee. Instead, include a few personal words to convey appreciation. Recently, I got a new manager in my department. She seems very unhappy, grumpy, doesn’t want to be there. In no way inspires us to improve our jobs. She creates a terrible vibe between myself and my co-workers. She lacks communication skills. We have no clue of how we are performing. I feel as though everyone does what they want and puts no effort in their task for the day. We always talk amongst ourselves and feel we have no sense of purpose. We just look forward to our paychecks every week. I feel she needs to push us forward and give us a visual goal towards the future so we have purpose and meaning to work harder. She needs to express confidence towards us and change her behavior towards work. As a result, my manager started communicating with us through our smart phones outside of work. She became friends with some of us through social media (Facebook) and started a more personal connection. I noticed she started opening up to us, letting us know what was expected of us during the day, texting us all the time.
