However, those who began the study with low appearance self-schema experienced less of a dramatic change. Similar in regard to one's self-schema, individuals in this study were tested on their “feared fat self” and how their negative self-schema can affect their mood and overpower their hoped for thin self. (Dalley & Vidal, 2013). This study found that optimism had an impact on the body appreciation scale in those who had a fear of a future fat self. Up until this point, the literature shows that society and environment has an impact on the emotional state of women, the next study tested to see how self-compassion affects college age women’s quality of life(QoL) (Duarte, Ferreira, Trindade & Pinto-Gouveia, 2015). The participants were tested on their QoL, body dissatisfaction and self-compassion on Likert scales. They found that self-perceived negative body image can negatively affect a person's quality of life and that self-compassion can act as a mediator between the external world and in the internal person and lead to a better QoL and positive body image.
