A quick search on the terms theology and theism show a large number of differing definitions and views. There are many other “isms” found alongside theism. Google found terms such as classical theism, open theism, monotheism, process theism, pantheism, and panentheism, along with several others. It does not take long to discover there are many different theories and beliefs involving God. Theism is the belief of the God of the Bible or “belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of the human race and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world” (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). God can and does perform miracles. Given that God is both external to and in this world, He understands current worldly situations and has the power to intervene if He so chooses. In the Bible, we see many of God’s mighty miracles. When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace, God stepped in and through a miracle saved them (Dan. 3:19-27). Through this one act alone, God saved three men and caused Nebuchadnezzar and others to witness the power and grace of God (Dan. 3:28-29).
God generally works quietly and at times mankind is unable to see the progress He has created. In Bible times, God performed miraculous acts in the world as he intervened in various situations. Current times do not find the types of large miracles as evidenced in the Bible. This does not in any way diminish God’s power or God’s love for mankind now. By studying theism and the three basic beliefs central to theism, Christians can understand their purpose as God created them. God first and foremost is both inherent to and beyond the world as we know it. He created the world and everything in it and yet still interacts with and sustains it.
