For decades, the use of animals for medical testing has been a topic of heated debate. In the US alone, it is estimated that 23 million animals are used for testing a year; the question is, is this necessary? Different people have contrasting views on this topic mostly because of diverse feelings for animals amongst the population. Some people view animals as family members and companions, while others view animals as a means for advancing medical techniques. Scientist and medical researchers say that there is no other way and that animal testing is the future to finding cures. However individuals perceive animals, the fact still remains that animal rights are being exploited for research, using animals in the medical area hasn’t helped nearly what we think, and these animals are subjected to pain and suffering.

First off, animal’s rights are being violated when used in research. The idea with animal rights is that “animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any way”1. Animals should be treated with the same respect we treat humans, as we possess many of the same attributes. Much like humans, animals feel, think, behave, and experience pain yet when being tested on they are not given a choice. Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher said, “The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity.…
