What´s Animal Testing Necessary?

For decades, the use of animals for medical testing has been a topic of heated debate. In the US alone, it is estimated that 23 million animals are used for testing a year; the question is, is this necessary? Different people have contrasting views on this topic mostly because of diverse feelings for animals amongst the population. Some people view animals as family members and companions, while others view animals as a means for advancing medical techniques. Scientist and medical researchers say that there is no other way and that animal testing is the future to finding cures. However individuals perceive animals, the fact still remains that animal rights are being exploited for research, using animals in the medical area hasn’t helped nearly what we think, and these animals are subjected to pain and suffering.

Animals feel pain in many of the same ways humans do, for example as a reaction both humans and animals scream. When animals are being used to test in laboratory environments, severe pain and frequently deadly experiments are inflicted on these animals. In these tests “animals are infected with diseases that they would never normally contract, tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made to suffer seizures…”5 These animals spend their lives in fear, deprivation, isolation and misery because these tests cannot be done without causing pain and in most cases, death. Effects from these tests range from chemical burns, blindness, and hemorrhaging. If the animals do not recover from these events they are simply euthanized, and if they do recover they are used for more testing.
