The Unhealthy and Healthy Marriages of Janie Mae Crawford
In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie has gone through three marriages. Each of her relationships were unique and different from one another. Two of her marriages were unhealthy while the other one was healthy. She learns different things from each of her marriages that helps her to know what love really is about. Ultimately, Janie learns that love is not easily obtained and has many obstacles to overcome from her three relationships and Hurston leaves the reader with the concept that love is not always as it seems and that both sides should do everything they can to achieve a happy marriage.
A marriage needs to have several elements that are necessary in order to be a healthy marriage. According to Dr. Christopher Jackson in “What is a Healthy Marriage,” the characteristics needed for a healthy marriage is relationship satisfaction, commitment to marriage, friendship and spending time together, intimacy and trust and honesty (1). More can be added on to that list by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in “A LifeCare Guide: Tips for a Healthy Marriage” such as, learning to communicate effectively, fight fair, express appreciation, maintain a sense of humor, learn to compromise, keep romance alive and take time for yourself (1).
