The Truth about Swimsuit Advertisements Swimsuit advertisements often portray an image of an unrealistic body which can cause women to become self conscious, therefore, companies should stop editing their models bodies and include all body types in their advertisements. Firstly, the women used to advertise swimsuits are often underweight according to their Body Mass Index (BMI). Secondly, swimsuit advertisements are heavily retouched. Thirdly, these advertisements do not illustrate all body types. The average BMI of the models used to advertise bikinis ranges from 16.2 to 17.9. This range classifies these models as being severely underweight. According to Unleashed Magazine (2012), underweight BMI’s are 18.5 or less. In addition, being underweight …show more content…
Most big swimsuit companies choose to only use women that are above average height and below average weight to advertise their products. By only using this specific body type, these companies portray an image of a body type that is unrealistic for the majority of women. Not all women are built the same, but swimsuit advertisements often fail to demonstrate that. It is much easier for a woman that is almost six feet tall to appear leaner in a photograph than a woman that is only five feet tall simply because the way their body is built. Therefore, large companies repeatedly neglect shorter woman by only including tall gorgeous women in their ads. In conclusion, it is not true to say that swimsuit advertisements are promoting a healthy body type. In reality, these advertisements have a negative impact on the physical and mental health of many women. The low BMI’s of the women used in these advertisements can cause serious health problems and their already skinny body’s are airbrushed to remove every imperfection. Finally, the body type used to advertise swimsuits is unrealistic for the vast majority of women. The time has come for big companies to stop retouching their
