Not all memories are pleasurable and happy. With food, we always reflect on whether it satisfies us or not and compare to other foods we’ve tasted before. Humans have cravings, every individual has different opinions on taste probably due to culture, personality or genetics, as Jean Savarin said “ anatomy tells us that not all tongues are equally outfitted” that is why every person has different opinions on food. In my understanding, ordinary memories and food memories are connected because food makes us remember significant memories and those memories makes us remember the food involved in that moment. She often makes the same tea, with the ingredients and materials, but it’s not as good as the tea her mother prepared that day. Maybe for others it’s just tea, but for her, it’s an unforgettable and beautiful food memory that will always remind her of her late mother.
In Proust’s “The Madeleine”, he explained what he felt when he tasted the madeleine. He described it as if “a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place”. It is also similar with Fisher’s The Pale Yellow Glove” because both of them has a clear memory when they first tasted their foods and they can’t compare it with the second or third time they consume
