As an adult, with years of experience under the belt, what seemed to be a big deal as a child is now a minute detail. As noted in the story Jinx by Aimee Bender, the two girls believe that they are in control and capable of everything, but yet they worry about the insignificant aspects in life, such as the way their body looks. In The Yellow Glove by Naomi Shihab Nye, the little girl has no control of what is happening in her life, and as her yellow glove gets swept away she is consumed by despair because she knows how much money gloves cost. As perceived in each of these stories, children see the world as so small and accordingly little things are a big deal. As people age the world becomes bigger so little things are not a big deal, and there are bigger matters to worry about.

In The yellow Glove, when the girl drops her glove she acts as if the world is going to end. She is so worried about her mother finding out so she keeps it to herself as if it is a monumental secret. In Jinx the two girls are obsessing over their body shape and over who is more developed than the other. They do not realize that the way that they look does not define who they are as a person, as they continue to whine over their butts and outfits. Adults reading The Yellow Glove understand that losing a little yellow glove is not that big of a deal, but can also understand why it proves to be such a problem for the girl. Adults understand that a child’s perspective on the world is so much narrower because they have not experienced as much. In Jinx, adults understand that the way a teenager develops will not affect the way the world sees them in the long run.
