In regard to a for-profit business, this paper will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of a learning organization. Learning organizations are unique in their methods of discovery and success. In Peter Senge’s book, The Fifth Discipline, he defines learning organizations as “organizations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to see the whole together” (Senge, 1990, p.3). By this, he means that in order to have success in a learning organization, it is key to work and think together. Learning organizations use a process of trial and error through creative and innovative thinking in order to get the results they desire (Kincki & Williams, 2006, p. 54). In order for a learning organization to build to its potential, it is vital that they continuously enhance their methods of learning. Their foundation is based off basic principles of component technologies that are referred to as the “Fifth Discipline” (Crookes, 2007, p. 1, para 3). These five disciplines are personal mastery, mental models, building shared visions, team learning, and system thinking.
