Personal Narrative: My Interest In Classroom Learning

Improved Essays
Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills."

My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half. The first day I walked into the classroom, I immediately connected with these students. They were so kind and had a genuine thirst for knowledge and learning. These kids were smart too. Some wrote essays about the importance of being bilingual and others on the boundaries between student and teachers.

From my personal experience, when I was in elementary school I remember my teacher would let us sit on yoga ball it always helped me concentrate and it helped me when I was really active because I could not move around, it will make me fall if I move around. I like the idea of standing desks because I prefer standing a lot but when I need to I could sit down on the tool, but I could still move my legs around and be somewhat active. So if one day you're feeling antsy you can just stand. Also I think if your tired it could help you stay awake. Mark Benden also states that sitting desk can cause kids to be obese, he also says that too much sitting is bad for your health.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. A few simple plants, some with colorful flowers, are placed around the classroom. The seating arrangements include circular tables, with four-to-five students at each table, for work in groups.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

More importantly, I remember how it made me feel to know that my instructors value myself and my peers enough to want to better themselves on our behalf. It made me as a student want to give as much effort as I could, as I knew that my teachers were doing the same for me. As I move forward in my own career as an educator, I hope that my students will also know that every effort that I give is to become a better teacher for them. In the music education field, there are so many workshops on teaching methods, composition and improvisation, movement in music, and so many more. I plan to participate in as many of these as I am able to, even if I am not required to do so.…

On the last day of my first placement, I felt for the first time what it is like to get through to a child with some difficulties paying attention and completing tasks, I saw what it was like to feel the accomplishments of being a teacher. For my first placement I went to Valley View Elementary, and was placed in a first grade class with Ms. Stehle and a fourth grade class with Mrs. Testolin. I loved both classes I was placed in because they were both very welcoming. In my first grade class there was twenty-two students with varying learning styles, the class was very ethnically diverse and included a few higher energy students that may of needed a little extra help. Each class size was ideal because it wasn’t too small, but had a good amount…

When I was in middle school, I tapped my pencil on my desk, bounced around in my seat, and spoke to my friends in class. I never realized how much it really affected my classroom performance. However, as I grew up and matured I took a step back and asked myself, “Why am I doing these things?” I realized that I was nervous about doing well due to my lack of confidence and I was only being provocative. I have noticed that you share the characteristic of being clamorous in class as well.…

I walked into my school with confidence on the first day of my junior year. I walked down to my advisory with a big, bright smile on my face grinning from ear to ear that this school year would be an excellent year. When my advisor, Ms. Taverna gave me my schedule, I noticed I had two teachers in two of my classes (AP literature and algebra two) instead of one. That's when I realized that I was still under the 504 plan that was placed on to me in middle school. A 504 plan is similar to an I.E.P. (an Individualized Education Program), but a 504 plan is accommodations that help the individual student successes in the classrooms.…

All the experiences with my students and instructors are the nutrients for me to become more mature. I started to see the true meaning of leadership. Instead of just giving them the fish, we should be the people who are teaching them how to fish and giving them the appropriate tools. Although I was a teaching assistance in high school, I was too much of spoon-feeding the students with the answers rather than helping them to see the method of approach. I learned the skills like time managements and mentally as well as emotionally present because I had the opportunity to be in the program.…
