In the short story, The Scarlet Ibis, by James Hurst, the writer is trying to tell us that there is a reason that pride and selfishness are two of the seven deadly sins. I say this because several times in the story the narrator (Doodle's brother) talks about how he is only teaching Doodle to walk for his own wellbeing. A good example of this is when he tells Doodle that he is going to teach him to walk and when he asks why he says so that he doesn't have to haul him around everywhere. Then in the middle of the story, the narrator says "I did not know that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.".
