Brother is guilty for the death of Doodle! Is pride a destructive force? In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, it was, and brings up a big question. Is Brother guilty for for Doodles death? The story is about a brother teaching his disabled brother how to live eventually leading to the disabled brother's death. According to my evidence Brother is guilty.

A reason Brother is guilty for the murder of Doodle is that he had been planning to kill him for years before the actual death. Brother admits to this on page 345 quoting, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” This proves to show that murdering Doodle was not a sudden mistaken death. The death of Doodle was intended and the brother had waited years for a proper chance to make the death look natural. Secondly throughout the story Brother shows his

The list included to make sure Doodle was kept calm, not to hot, not too cold, out of the sun, and little stress on his heart. However on page 349 it is said, “I would teach him how to run, to swim, to climb trees, and to fight.” Brother was explaining that after he taught Doodle how to walk he felt confident enough to plan a program to teach Doodle how to run, swim, row, and climb trees. This shows that Brother, knowing the list of don’ts, made Doodle do things that made him excited and his heart beat fast leading very possibly to his death. Also at the end of the story Brother and Doodle were running home in the storm and every time Doodle caught up, Brother would run faster. This caused Doodle to be excited, his heart to beat too fast, and his body temperature to drop down to low. This is what lead to Doodle dying by choking on his own blood. However despite this some people believe Brother is

Brother has taken an authoritative and destructive stand over Doodle. Doodle, again being so young, only wants to make his brother happy by doing what he is told and takes these acts as acts of love as most kids would. Doodle only sees the surface, which is his big brother trying to teach him how to walk but is really just his first steps towards death. Brother also refers to Doodle as his “pride” because brother's love for Doodle is basically feeding off his pride by thinking he is doing something gracious for Doodle. Brother states that “ They did not know that I did it for myself, ……

The narrator was the only one who does not possess a normal brother, so the narrator was not even apologetic enough and gave up his time during the summers just to cause him to have pride. ”Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother. ”For this reason it just shows that she only did it because she was ashamed of her having a brother that is different from everyone else, it's the narrator's fault because if Doodle was out of the world he wouldn't be ashamed anymore and wouldn't have to worry about other people making him feel unwelcome in life because of his brother. ”One day I took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all had believed he would die.…
