Have you ever wondered exactly how the voting process works and what happens once you make that little check mark next to the candidate of your choice? Well thankfully these and many more questions were answered by Ms. Kirk Showalter at the October meeting of the Richmond First Club. An organization that since 1919 has been dedicated to educating the public on a variety of civic issues, policies and hopefully coming up with solutions to these problems. Focusing mainly on issues central to the Richmond, VA community this club has for almost a hundred years provided unbiased leadership and education in an effort to make not only Richmond but Virginia a better and more educated place to live. This was definitely accomplished in Ms. Showalters speech on Wednesday which brought to light all the different mechanisms working…
Is voting a crucial factor in shaping one's livelihood? According to Russell Glass’s February 2020 article from The Chicago Tribune “Want a revolution? It’s easy to vote,” Glass argues that American voters and anyone who wants to make a change in democracy should. In fact, Glass emphasizes that voting is a revolution that can be won through the simple act of submitting a ballot. This argument is timely, based on the context of the impending 2020 Presidential Election.…
Sectionalism is the division of the Northern and Southern political beliefs in the United States. One of the main differences between the North and the South was their opinions on slavery. The North was completely industrialized; factories were being built and because of the massive immigrant population slaves were not needed, nor benefited the Northern economy. In the South, the economy was made up of an agricultural society. The North prospered as an industrialized economy because of the development and the invention of new transportation such as the railroad system and canals.…
Malfunction Alert Thesis: The united states government has become extremely dysfunctional over the course of the last few years according to many professional writers. Elements that contribute to a defective Washington are polarization, tribalism, and the inflexibility of politicians. Susan Page, author of “Divided We Now Stand” explains that many Americans are aware of the increasing polarization, a stance on an issue defined by a party, and that citizens believe that politicians are more polarized than them. However, Page argues that voters are to blame as well.…
In “The Vanishing Voter”, he discusses the impact nonvoters have on society. Patterson’s goal is to persuade citizens to participate in voting and to educate nonvoters to realize voting is something that all citizens should be included in. Patterson wrote “The Vanishing Voter” to make Americans more aware of their impact on the world.…
With a government elected by its citizens and that effects every aspect of our lives from schools to health care to homeland security, voting is an important right in our society. Because of this importance, everyone as a community needs to help increase voter turnout. They can start by urging the governor and Legislature to make voting a value we respect. They can continue to make recommendations to the Legislature in every cycle to improve voter registration and the states’ turnout performance. Another way to help voter turnout would by encouraging others to vote.…
The Voice Of America in Chains Voting is a large part of what America is today. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people”. The voice of the people is what makes the big decisions in America and mostly through choosing who will represent us in our government in elections. This makes the vote valuable, because it has the power to make decisions and change outcomes. Although many will argue that Mandatory voting will provide a better representation of the Consensus, it will actually demote civic virtues and limit individual freedoms.…
Chapter One: Main Reasons for Separation Dr. Hyles makes clear in this chapter that God created us and wants us to live a separated life. He states man was created for God, in order for the Great God to have a certain object on which to bestow his infinite love. The reason God wants us to be separate is because God is a jealous God and wants us to fellowship with him. We should understand that since we are just the ones created we should not expect or desire praise, God has created us and he is the only one who deserves praise. God gives us things to make us happy, but is jealous if those things pull us away from him.…
Once reconstruction ended the people who were in charge of the south before the civil war slowly started to regain power and these people were not happy that their slaves were now freedmen, so they began to pass a number of laws known as the Jim Crow Laws. Jim crow was the name of a popular minstrel show, which is a performance that made fun of black people. The Jim Crow laws were designed to isolate African Americans and place them in a inferior position compared to white people. This was the beginning of segregation in the post-civil war south. In many countries people were taught that whites were the chosen people and blacks were cursed.…
Introduction I voted for the first time in 2014, only a month after I had turned 18. I felt proud to be participating in our democracy and to be fulfilling my individual responsibility as a member of this country. However, I believe I only did so because I did not struggle with the hurdles that many others in Kansas face. The reason I am writing to you today is to address the impact these hurdles have on voter turnout and to propose a solution to this problem. As the Kansas Secretary of State, you are tasked with deciding the requirements that citizens must meet in order to vote in these elections.…
No American accomplished more to lead our nation out of the wild of isolation.' Why is this considered wild? I would state that isolation is consider wild in light of the fact that the meaning of it in states that it is the activity of being particular to various races. what's more, in the wild creatures are against each and particular and live alone and in racial issues, for example, isolation individuals are against each other. Might you be able to state that all foul play is a wild?…
The notion of “separateness of persons” has posed several convincing objections to utilitarianism. These have been voiced by Rawls, Nozick and Nagel all of which have disregarded the moral force that drives utilitarianism, highlighting the theories lack of recognition of individuality and separate utility. To me, the “separateness of persons” not only is successful in silencing utilitarianism, it also is crucial to our very concept of morality. I argue this through presenting defeats to classical objections to the dogma, proposed by Brink and Mckerlie. In doing so, it highlights that morality is reliant on individuality and personal values.…
Through voting, an individual can feel both powerful, and capable of shaping their community, country, and world. Because a person can express their preference when voting, the decision a voter makes can help to direct or elect a group or person who supports their beliefs. In our government, there are two major parties, and a plethora of smaller parties. However, because a person may not always agree with either of the major parties, they still have the option of siding with the smaller parties. These smaller parties then express the voter’s ideals to the major parties, and potentially change the direction of the major parties through donations.…
The American founding fathers were whiny, white affluent men who revolted against their government, because they did not want to pay their share of taxes. This is how our country began; This is how our country is run today. The illusion of an American constitution protecting the rights of all of its citizens has historically been shown to be bent, and at times, fully violated without consequences. This nation is one of the fastest growing among its minorities, but the majority of its elected officials are disproportionally white. According to the public opinion polling company, Gallup, it polled non-Hispanic whites at 89 percent among conservatives, compared to 60 percent among liberals.…
FairVote is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization working to improve voter turnout rates through promoting electoral reform. Founded in 1992 and named the Center for Voting and Democracy in 1993, FairVote aims ensure proportional representation for all citizens. FairVote advocates for the reform of the country’s electoral system as a tactic to increase voter turnout rates due to the “ number of systemic electoral reforms that reverse the contextual reasons for low turnout.” The organization correlates low voter turnout rates and citizen misrepresentation to the country’s current use of the electoral system. FairVote credits hefty voter turnout rates to a healthy democracy and, thus, their mission of reforming the electoral college will result in an increase voter turnout rates, and therefore, proportional representation.…
