Sectionalism In The United States

Great Essays
Sectionalism is the division of the Northern and Southern political beliefs in the United States. One of the main differences between the North and the South was their opinions on slavery. The North was completely industrialized; factories were being built and because of the massive immigrant population slaves were not needed, nor benefited the Northern economy. In the South, the economy was made up of an agricultural society. The North prospered as an industrialized economy because of the development and the invention of new transportation such as the railroad system and canals. The South prospered agriculturally because of the newly discovered Black Belt and Eli Whitney’s invention, the cotton gin. Different events such as the Missouri …show more content…
The real reason for the states economic decline was that the farmland was overused and crops were not growing. Some extremists considered seceding from the Union (Brinkley, 206). When this happened, John Calhoun developed nullification. Nullification is when a state government believes the federal government has passed a law that is unconstitutional, the state can hold a convention and proclaim the law null and the state does not have to follow this law (Brinkley, 206). In 1832, South Carolinians wanted to nullify the tariff of abominations. This was called the Nullification Crisis. The convention agreed to nullify the tariffs from 1828 to 1832 and it forbade the collection of duties throughout the whole state (Brinkley, 207). Jackson did not react calmly to the situation, he ordered a warship to Charleston and strengthened the federal forts. Jackson also developed a force bill, which allowed the President to use military force to make sure acts of Congress were followed through (Brinkley, 207). Henry Clay came up with a compromise to ease the tension and to avoid violence. His idea was to lower the tariff gradually so the tariff would reach the same level it was in 1816 by 1842. On March 1, 1833, both the force bill and the compromised were passed and signed by President Jackson. In reaction to the force bill, South Carolina repealed the …show more content…
These factors may not have directly contributed to sectionalism but they add to the problem, eventually leading to the Civil War. The population during the pre Civil War Era was rapidly growing. The death rate declined due to the advancement of public health and the decline of diseases (Brinkley, 222). Not only was the death rate going down, but also the birth rate was increasing. The rate of African Americans increased slower because of the faster death rate. The slave trade became illegal in 1808 (Brinkley, 222). In the South, the majority of their population consisted of African Americans and in the North, a good portion of the working people were immigrants from Ireland and Germany. The economy in the North and the South was quite different because of its geography. In the South, the Black Belt and other areas similar created a great place for agriculture. King Cotton took control of the South and once Eli Whitney created the cotton gin, picking and using cotton became an easier and less time consuming task (Brinkley, 249). The agricultural system did prosper in the South with the development of plantations. In the North, the industrialized system was a success due to the new forms of transportation. The building of railroads and canals helped create a way of products to be

Vice President, John C. Calhoun wrote “South Carolina Exposition and Protest” a document that greatly provoke the Nullification Crisis and also led to the Southern secession. The Crisis began in 1832 when the series of protective tariffs, tariffs are taxes placed on goods imported from foreign countries that prepared a nation to raise money ( "1832 Nullification Crisis"). The Nullification Crisis began when Congress passed the Tariffs of 1828, which was the third protective tariffs and taxes increased to 50% and it was also designed to motivate Northern industry by collecting high import duties on cheaper British goods. While Northern states stoop profit richly from the tariffs, Southern states were not happy with the tariffs as…

"But the plain truth is that [John C.] Calhoun was entirely correct in his opposition to the tariff. Debates about the actual macro- and micro economic effects of antebellum protection are beside the point. The South, providing the bulk of the Union's exports, sold in an unprotected world market, while all American consumers bought in a highly protected one. And this was to the benefit of one class, no matter how plausibly disguised as a public boon. The question of how important the tariff was in causing the war stems from the Nullification Crisis, which was South Carolina's attempt to nullify a tariff and lasted from 1828 to 1832.…

In the state election of 1832, the Nullifiers and Unionists clashed head-on in the nullification crisis in South Carolina. Congress “tipped the balance by passing the new Tariff of 1832,” and in an act of defiance, South Carolina threatened to leave the Union. But who won this debacle? With Andrew Jackson sitting as the President, was this tactic truly effective? The fact of the matter is that the national government “won” the nullification crisis because, in the end, South Carolina returned back to the Union with little to no hesitation, but in the long-term, the Southern states might have achieved their ultimate goal of lowering the Tariff.…

The idea of the nullification came from John Calhoun, who believed that the federal tariffs were unconstitutional, in which made the people follow his belief’s as cotton growers within the South began to hurt financially due to the tariff tax, which reduced the British demand for the raw cotton in the US. When the convention took place within South Carolina and they were able to nullify the 1828 and 1832 Tariffs, Jackson requested from Congress, to past the “Force Bill” which would provide him with the authorization needed to obtain the US Army to make South Carolina become compliant with the federal law. As South Carolina was about to be under attack by the US Army, they were able to back down and accept the compromise presented. During the period of antebellum, the driving force between sectionalism in the north and south was slavery, or the ownership by whites of blacks who did their work for them and were treated like animals rather than humans. After the civil war, blacks were emancipated, or freed, and were also granted citizenship in the 14th Amendment. During the time in American history known as Reconstruction, the south was being rebuilt after the damage it took during the Civil War, and blacks were beginning to gain more legal rights and equalities that they were previously denied. Reconstruction came to an end because once African Americans were considered citizens and were no longer considered slaves people began to believe that the issue over blacks was done, so the white discrimination continued, only now legalized. After Reconstruction, the social status of African Americans fell back into the lowliness that it was before the Civil War broke out.…

Calhoun voiced the opinion of countless southern farmers, on the tariff of abominations. “the proposed tariff was in fact little more than “an immense tax on one portion of the community to put money into the pockets of another.” The Northern and Southern states evolved into two very different territories, because of their vastly different economies. The diverse needs of the different economies caused economic policies controversial, because each policy could only support one economy.…
