The Revolutions of 1848 was a widespread in the history of Europe this response to social and economic pressures brought on by the eighteenth century Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. Conservative monarchs throughout Europe were threatened as middle and working class people attempted to establish new governments that allowed the common man a voice in government function. This is the reason why the revolutions happened in Germany, Italy, and France and each revolution failed to achieve any significant change in each country.
One of the causes that took place during the 1848 revolutions was the economic crisis. This happened between 1845 and 1846 due to poor cereal harvests together with potato blight created conditions of near starvation. There was a rise in food prices in most of Europe, leading to strikes, demonstrations and ‘food riots’. It was in this environment that the revolutions of 1848 had occurred.
The second cause that also took place was the discontent caused by political repression of liberal and nationalist aspirations
The revolutions of 1848 were based on the principles of socialism, liberalism the liberals wanted to limit church influence and state power they also wanted republican government, economic freedom as well as civil liberties. The third group is nationalism, nationalist wanted national unity which was based on common language, culture, religion and shared history.
