One of the causes that took place during the 1848 revolutions was the economic crisis. This happened between 1845 and 1846 due to poor cereal harvests together with potato blight created conditions of near starvation. There was a rise in food prices in most of Europe, leading to strikes, demonstrations and ‘food riots’. It was in this environment that the revolutions of 1848 had occurred.

The revolutions of 1848 were based on the principles of socialism, liberalism the liberals wanted to limit church influence and state power they also wanted republican government, economic freedom as well as civil liberties.
