Societal classes had existed in Europe long before the Industrial Revolution. However, these classes began to function differently with the growth of industry. In Document 4, Edward Goodall’s Cottonopolis, we see an almost complete industrial takeover of the natural world. Edwin Chadwick, a popular British social reformer, known for working with the Poor Law Commissioners to take care of poor health conditions, writes in Document 5 that he is working on “new structural arrangements for the protection of public health”. Furthermore, Document 6, written by English native Friedrich Engels, talks about poor living conditions.
