Since the 18th century, a number of countries around the world have abolished the practice entirely, nowadays Death penalty is abolished in most countries of the world such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey and Australia. In the 1967 Ronald Joseph Ryan was the last person to be legally executed in Australia. In the 1984 Australia abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes and a year later they have abolished the death penalty for all the crimes as they had many reasons for that.
Advantages and disadvantages of abolishing the death penalty
Executing the innocent, no matter how developed the justice system is there will still be errors and many innocent people will be punished for crimes that they did not commit and unlike imprisonment, death penalty cannot be reversed. According to a study conducted in the US, there is more than 4% of the people who received death penalty are innocent. One of the most famous innocent execution stories in Australia has taken place in 24/April/1922, after Colin Campbell Eadie Ross was convicted of a murder of a child, and despite the evidence of him being innocent he was still executed, it was not until the 1990s that he was proven innocent. Also Value of human life is one of the reasons as most of the countries that have abolished the death penalty and the people who oppose it, believe that every human life is valuable and that everyone has the right to live, even the worst murderers should not be deprived of the value of their lives. Another reason will be that some may believe that it is An easy way out as many people believe that death sentence is an easy way out and that a quick lethal injection cannot be compared to some of the horrific murders and rapes these victims suffers and killing a murderer does not bring his victim back to life. Spending a life time imprisonment in jail may be the best alternative as he will spend the whole life living under the rules and in harsh conditions and regret his crime every day of his life. Some people believe that the death penalty may be applied unfairly and just because two crimes appear similar, doesn’t mean that the same sentence should be applied to both of them. Every crime is unique as the victim is different, so is the defendant. Some people believe that the poor people who committed major crimes, have higher chances of being sentenced to death as they are not able to afford their private lawyer and they have to depend on the lawyer hired by the state even if he wasn’t the right person for the case. Some factors also should be taken into account such as mental illness, circumstances. Most of the tax payers believe that the death penalty is Expensive as it was proven that most of the cases which involves death penalty is much more expensive than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, as the process is very long and complex so that no innocent women or men are executed for crimes they did not commit, and that the country …show more content…
That punishment can be replaced with other types of punishment such as life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, which also servers the same purpose as the death penalty as it removes the threat away from the society without taking the life of another human being. And unlike the death penalty, life imprisonment is reversible and an innocent who is kept in jail can be
