When people hear the word “pit bull” they immediately think of a dangerous and very vicious dog, responsible for attacks on people and other dogs. But should they really be considered dangerous? The description of a pit bull (American Staffordshire Terrier) according to the American Kennel Club (AKC) says, “should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. He should be stocky but not long-legged or racy in outline.” Pit bull terriers should not be considered dangerous since a majority of dog attacks are not pit bulls and the media is bias towards them. Pit bulls have been labelled as dangerous and vicious dogs. It is believed that they are naturally vicious and more aggressive towards people. But there is no research that specifically shows that breeds with a fighting past are more aggressive towards people. In fact there are very few incidents where an actual pit bull terrier was responsible for an attack on a person. In the United States, the word “pit bull” is actually used more as a generic term that includes all the bull and terrier breeds. Breed identification is not very consistent and sometimes even experts have a hard time identifying an actual American Pit Bull Terrier. Usually the breed identification of a dog that had attacked a person is taken from the victim or an eyewitness of the attack. Pit bulls are commonly misidentified because of this. People also…
