“86.8 percent of American Pit Bull Terriers have passed their temperament tests” (O’Connor). If this is legitimate, then why are so many people afraid of these affectionate animals? There have been, in some cities, bans put on pit bulls because of a high amount of reports of pit bulls biting people. This reason is not the dogs’ faults. Think about it; who trains these dogs and why are people being bitten? Just because there has been a small number of pit bull attacks on humans doesn’t mean that pit bulls should be banned, it means that there should be laws and restrictions for those who own them. There can be changes made to the way that pit bulls are handled and at the same time only experienced and responsible owners should be allowed to handle these loving, but determined dogs. This restriction on pit bulls is called Breed-Specific Legislation, or BSL. There are “about 200 cities and towns… [that] restrict or prohibit ownership of certain breeds of dogs” (Mott). This new epidemic of pit bull attacks has caused certain cities to ban the ownership of them. Apparently, “in Tijeras, New Mexico, there is a pit bull ban that says animal controllers can kill a pit bull on sight without talking to the owner”(Bastian). This should not be the way it is handled, because now over half of the dogs euthanized are pit bulls (O’Connor). “The difficulty with Breed-Specific Legislation is that it doesn’t address the root problem: dogs are bred and [handled] by people” (Mott).
