Since terriers were considered smarter and more respected than Bull dogs this cross was expected to have a civilizing influence. This cross breed began to gain popularity and in a few years became "the most handsomest and best of all terriers and the dog of excellence, for a gentleman's pet and companion". After bull baiting became illegal in 1835 dog fighting turned into a popular replacement and of course Bull Terrier being the most popular dog was the perfect candidate for this bloody and cruel sport. As colonization of America began growing immigrants and explorers from England brought along across the ocean not only their families but their dogs as well. And here, in America, Bull Terrier cross breed was valued for much more than their fighting abilities. They worked as essential helpers on family farms, were helping their owners to hunt and were entrusted to protect homes and even accompany children and protect them. The Pit bull was the favorite dog of many politicians and celebrities and images of "All American Dog" were everywhere. One particular Pit Bull named Sergeant Stubby became an American Hero during World War I. This remarkable four-legged soldier who was living as a stray dog on the streets of Connecticut became the most decorated war dog and the first dog in American military history to wear sergeant's stripes. Sergeant Stubby served in 17 battles, saved many lives and earned nearly a dozen of medals in various actions. Things however set off for a change around late 1970's when dog fighting started to gain popularity again and stories about toughness and danger of Pit Bulls began to expand. The breed quickly came to represent aggression and was often used as guard dogs for drug dealers and gangsters. The reputation of Pit Bull was completely demolished. The most unwanted, dangerous and aggressive breed that should be banned is a perception of Pit Bull in our society that people still debate about
