There are always possible consequences that come from posting online about young children. For instance, it is very common for parents to post about their child whether it is their “name,” or “birth date”, or even their whereabouts with them. Parents do not want to put their children in danger but with them posting about their children all the time, their children are at risk for “identity theft and digital kidnapping” (Lafrance). Consequently, even if parents are posting in private chats or private accounts they can never be too careful. Parents have to trust that the people who they are sharing these photos and posts with will not “misuse” (Lafrance) them in any way that could be harmful to their children in the future. Also, they need to believe that these same people take their “privacy settings” seriously and that they are careful about who uses their “accounts” (Lafrance) for social media that might have bad intentions. Equally important, children who had parents that posted about them all the time when they were young could have their information on the internet “for years”; as a result, it could mean that the “children’s goals” (qtd. in Lafrance) might not be accomplished.
