The Pearl Reflection

Writing an essay is an art which takes practice, perseverance, and time to perfect. Recently, I wrote and essay which analyzed a book called The Pearl and had to use all of my experience. The essay I wrote was a little over 900 words and required me to examine the roles of women in The Pearl. From start to finish the paper taught me invaluable lessons on the integral elements of the writing process. These elements led me on a wonderful journey of literary construction I had never previously encountered. In roughly a week, I finished my thesis, expanded my topic points, and spent the rest of my time reviewing and revising the paper. My final paper did not take as much work or time as I expected. However, I still sharpened my time management …show more content…
No matter the quality of help I received, every edit to my paper was decided by myself. This total independence forced me to quickly learn how to use my own skills for revision and rely less on outside guidance. Moreover, when no one was available to critique my essay I had to make sure I assembled gratifying amendments. If I did not cultivate my ability to revise, I would have risked underwhelming progress and poor content reforms. Fortunately, I did endeavor to expand my revision skills. My teacher and class website provided many tools and packets that I used myself to really chaperon my edits. All of these utilities demonstrated how and what I should learn. Now after experiencing a scholarly writing assignment, I not only understand the need for self revision but have the tools and know how to edit independently in any situation. The entire essay I wrote analyzing The Pearl taught me how to manage my time, take criticism, and think critically about my writing. In the future, I will have the confidence to apply lessons I have learned to every paper I write and I will hold assurance in my aptitude to finish any assignment. Everyone should undertake at least one writing experience similar to my own. Nothing can compare to the particular lessons that writers learn about themselves and the literary

After each paper I write, I notice the progress I have made with my writing. I am able to continue improving on many aspects of my writing, but each time I finish an essay, I realize how much more efficient the process has become for me. In this analysis, I will explain my assertions and assess the things I have done well, along with the aspects I can continue to improve on for the next time. The National Anthem is a very powerful song, and like many other Americans, I have heard it being played before sporting events on television and at my school for my entire life.…

In her 1980 article, Sommers realized through her case study, that “students understand the revision process as a rewording activity” (p. 381). Which means that when first-year college students revise, they simply change words around and try to get the ideas accurate on the text because they have not developed the ability to review their work, and redo it if necessary (p. 382). Instead, she argues that students should see revision “as an activity in which they modify and develop perspectives and ideas” (p. 382). She argues this because students should develop their arguments on their writing pieces during revision to prove their thesis statement better, rather than simply reword their paragraphs to make their writing pieces sound better. Sommers believes in her 1980 article that first-year college students should develop the ability to see revision as a process to approach revision…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

In two essays following my entrance essay, thesis statements became my biggest issue. I received a ninety on my entrance essay, so naturally I assumed that any future essay would only get better. This was not the case for me at all because instead of improvement, I regressed. The only way to correct my problem was to find the issue and figure out a resolution. Over the course of the semester, I have become aware that I still need to learn to write complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements.…

As an English learner, I have experienced many challenges during the learning process, yet I haven’t given up my hope. Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect.…

However, I know that editing improves your work and make it look better. Every time I thought that I was done there was always a mistake that needed to be corrected. Correcting a paper that is 20 pages or less is much easier than a paper with more than 70 pages. When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
