My Entrance Essay: Itawamba Community College

Improved Essays
In two essays following my entrance essay, thesis statements became my biggest issue. I received a ninety on my entrance essay, so naturally I assumed that any future essay would only get better. This was not the case for me at all because instead of improvement, I regressed. The only way to correct my problem was to find the issue and figure out a resolution. Over the course of the semester, I have become aware that I still need to learn to write complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements.
Before beginning my English course for Itawamba Community College, I considered writing essays as my strong suits. A previous teacher taught me to write implied thesis statements with a strong body paragraph and a moderate conclusion. Of

This realization went unnoticed until my third essay rough draft had been sent back to me, making it clear that I still had not executed the skill of successfully creating a complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statement. This positional essay may have been the most difficult for me to complete. I say this simply because my instructor repeated her comment from the week before and also said my thesis statement was not fully developed. Her exact comment being, “thesis needs to be more specific and further developed.” (“Persuasive Essay” 1.) When seeking my teacher’s feedback, she told me my thesis statement needed more structure and was not well thought out. She further explained the structure and organization of a thesis statement creates the setting of an essay as a whole. Receiving these critiques from both my instructors devastated me. All the time I thought I was progressing, I was regressing and it reflected in my grades. My very best received a fifty three on both my rough draft and final copy of my positional …show more content…
The completion of three rough drafts and three final drafts, along with the help and constructive criticism of my instructors, are what helped me find my weakness in writing essays. The solution to my weakness is to learn to create complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements. One can only achieve this through the continual practice of writing essays and executing each skill one at a time. My room for improvement is infinite. I will not stop trying to better myself until I have reached my full potential of writing a near perfect essay with a correctly formulated thesis

The first essay was mostly a personal essay where a topic was chosen then it had to be related to an essay called “Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay using the same format Gay used. The second essay was an argumentative essay which we had to compare multiple sources, an essay called “Why Nice Guys Finish Last” by Julia Serano and two TED Talks and come up with one conclusion that ties all the sources together but still add personal views within the essay. Comparing my grades, I found that I did better on essay one than I did on essay two. I believe that I did better on essay one because it was a personal essay where I put my own thoughts into the writing. As for essay two, I believe that I struggled with creating a thesis and relying on the quotes and sources to make my essay rather than adding personal thoughts into…

I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

The strengths and weaknesses in this paper are glaringly apparent to me now, but then I obviously missed them or had not taken the time to correct them. My biggest weakness with writing in general, and in relation to this American History essay, is forming a clear thesis. I know this for multiple reasons. One, it never feels very clear when I’m writing it, I feel like I try to stick in a bunch of information that doesn’t need to be there and do not develop the statement of the paper clearly enough.…

I am not perfect and my writing is no different. In my 1102 course I learned that I am not the best judge of my writing. When reading my essays in my head I know what I mean to say therefore, I skim over typos and grammatical errors. In addition to grammatical errors, I struggle with developing a thesis. First Draft: American entrepreneur, Jim Rohn, says that people are “average of the five people [they] spend the most time with.”…

Wyrick Summary Before people decide to write anything down, that person must have valuable ideas to tell readers: “For many writers, getting started is the hardest part” (Wyrick 3). Writers often keep journals to keep track of ideas and inspirations. There is a process that writers use to choose a subject. Sometimes a writer needs to find a happy place, a space where the writer feels most comfortable, to find the essay's main subject.…

A thesis statement introduces the main idea of an essay. The thesis statement is typically located in the last sentence of the introductory paragraph. The thesis statement usually serves as the focus of your essay and should be developed, supported, and explained. Beyond the introduction of the main idea, the thesis statement tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the essay, foreshadows how “I” will depict the subject of discussion, and makes an arguable statement for the reader to interpret for themselves. To be a strong thesis statement, the thesis statement must follow four components: the thesis statement must be narrow and manageable, present your argument, foreshadow your essay, and present an arguable statement.…

In the introductory paragraph to this essay about essays I will tell you that you don’t need an introductory paragraph, at least not of the 1) topic sentence 2) structural methodology 3) thesis statement varity that we were all taught in high school. What you do need is That Thing; maybe a question, a fear or a fury. It makes your blood boil. It’s all you can talk about when you sit down with your friends over a glass of wine or two or five, or maybe you can’t talk about it with anyone, just your own heart, alone with the impossible architecture of words. As Cheryl Strayed wrote in her introduction to The Best American Essays 2013, “Behind every good essay is an author with a savage desire to know more about what is already known.”…

To the Members of the Portfolio Committee, When I came to Spelman, I was an English major who lacked confidence in my writing and my intelligence at times. I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major.…

After my completion of AP English junior year, I felt better than ever about my writing. Although it is okay to be confident in your skills, I entered this year with a sense of satisfaction and no desire to take my writing abilities to the next level. Due to this lack of ambition, I haphazardly threw my first week essay together and genuinely thought my teacher would be in awe over my skills- as I was only a senior entering a college course. When I received my grade, I was shocked to see that I had been placed into the scoring category of “weak”, and my teacher ultimately wasn’t so pleased after all. After some reflection, I reached the conclusion that my teacher was right- I deserved that five out of twenty.…
